Er(r)go’s current issue revolves around the problem of cultural transfer and its presence in contemporary theatre as well as in related arts such as dance or performance. Drawing from the whole range of methodological perspectives, from the theory of contact zones, to the reinterpretation of cultural myths and their (un)translatability, to the questions of adaptation and textual re-appropriation, the Authors of the texts collected in the current volume point to the evolution of contemporary theatre, both Polish and European. The evolution in question stems from the paradigm change detectable in performance arts and is stimulated by the phenomenon of cultural mobility. In the age of multicultural transitions and disappearing boundaries of geo-cultural territories, cultural mobility inspires new areas of meeting and exchange, at the same time moving the demarcation lines of traditional theatre towards new regions defined through relocation, “re-writing,” transgression and adaptation. Another sphere of problems permeating the current issue’s texts revolves around the theatrical representation of cultural myths as appropriated against the intertextual background of contemporary culture approached both in terms of the ubiquitous influence of mass media and in the context of textual “borrowings” from classical drama and the cultural recontextualization which they undergo in theatrical representations.
